Chronic Kidney Disease
"In 2007, the Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative (CKD) was started by a former SNPhA Regional Facilitator Cornetta Levi, Pharm. D. and Abbvie Medical Science Liaisons, Nana Wiafe, Pharm. D. and Janinah Barreto, Pharm. D. The purpose of the initiative is to implement programs and projects to make people aware of the health disparities in chronic kidney disease and to utilize all resources to educate those at a higher risk about the prevalence, prevention, treatment, and management of the underlying causes of CKD."

" While Chronic Kidney Disease (or CKD for short) may not sound as “flashy” as other disease states such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes, it is actually quite a prevalent and dangerous disease state. According to the National Kidney Foundation, around 30 million American adults have CKD and millions of others are at increased risk. Hypertension (or high blood pressure) can cause CKD, and many different people with disease states such as diabetes are at an increased risk. Nearly half of the people with severely reduced kidney function are not aware that they have CKD. CKD is a disease state that can lead to other diseases such as anemia, and if left untreated CKD can worsen rapidly. Our goal at SNPhA is to inform the public on prevalence, prevention, treatment, and management of chronic kidney disease. In doing this, we hope to help better the lives and well-being of our patients."
